Redmi Note 9S is another excellent device from Xiaomi in the budget segment after back to back successful releases of Note 8 and Note 7 series. It is a rebranded Redmi Note 9 Pro for the Indian market. Spec-wise, It packs a Snapdragon 720G Chipset along with 6 GB of RAM. On the front, the display is 6.67 inches LCD IPS panel with a Full HD resolution and got a Punch hole in the top middle. Coming to the battery, it packs a massive 5020 mAh with 18W fast charging support.
Cut to the chase, Rooting Redmi Note 9S is a pretty simple process that includes patching the boot.img with magisk and then flashing it via fastboot. It is a four steps process, and all steps are given below with full detail. Remember, Rooting Redmi Note 9S will stop the OTA updates, although you can download and manually flash the Recovery package with TWRP. So, let us get started:

How to Root Redmi Note 9S with Magisk and Unlock Bootloader

Pre-requisite
- Install the ADB and Fastboot along with USB drivers
- Download the Stock Firmware and Extract it, Find Boot.img and move it to adb folder in C: Drive
How to Root Redmi Note 9S:
Step 1: Unlock the Bootloader
Step 2: Download Firmware for Redmi Note 9S and Extract Boot.img
Step 3: Patch the Boot.img using Magisk Manager
Step 4: Flash the Patched Boot.img using PC (fastboot)
Let see the aforementioned steps in detail:
Step 1: Unlock the Bootloader, Enable OEM Unlock, and USB Debugging
- Go to My Device and Tap on Build Number a few times to Enable Developer Options.
- Enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlock in developers options
- Go to Developer Options and find the “Mi Unlock status” Option, Open it and then Tap on “Add account and device”. If it gives error 86012 then try after a week, do not try to bind the account again and again as it can temporarily ban your account from binding.
- If you get a network problem while binding the account, then logout from the Mi Account and then select “Add Account and Device”, proceed with Logging in your Account from here.
- Download Mi Unlock Tool from Download Section and Open it as Administrator.
- Boot your device into Fastboot mode by pressing and holding Power + Volume down buttons.
- Follow the instruction on the Mi Unlock Tool and Unlock the Device. Sometimes, you may get a time limit on Unlocking the device, the only option here is to wait for that time and then unlock the device.
Step 2: Download Firmware for Redmi Note 9S and Extract Boot.img
- Download the Firmware from above
- Extract the zip file and you will find a file named boot.img
- Copy the file to your Redmi Note 9S
Step 3: Patch the Boot.img using Magisk Manager
- Download Magisk Manager Manager from above and Install it
- Open the App and Click on Install Magisk
- Then choose the option “Select and Patch a File”
- Choose the boot.img you previously moved to Redmi Note 9S.
- It will produce a patched file named magisk_patched.img in Download folder
Step 4: Flash the Patched Boot.img using PC (fastboot)
- Move the Patched magisk_patched.img to the pc in C:/adb folder
- Boot the Device Into Fastboot by Turning off the Device and then hold Volume down + Power Button.
- Connect the Redmi Note 9S to your PC, Make sure all drivers are Installed, including ADB and Fastboot
- Shift + Right-click and open PowerShell window or command window
- Type this command to make sure the device is connected
fastboot devices
- If the device is connected, it will return the device fastboot ID.
- Next, type this command to flash Patched boot image, Make sure that patched boot image is named magisk_patched.img
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
- This will flash the patched boot image file, Now type this command to reboot to system
fastboot reboot
- Go to the Magisk Manager app to check the root status

Shift + Left click and open PowerShell window or command window
Type this command to make sure the device is connected

If the device is connected, then it will return a window like this
i never understood what the shift + left click does
i opened commmand prompt and typed the “given line” and after pressing enter its just new line
then i went ahead for second “given line”
i got “waiting for device”

Sorry for the Mistake Divyesh, We forgot to mention that you need to Boot the device into Fastboot mode first, after that, the “fastboot devices” will return the fastboot ID. Also, It was Shift + Right Click.

We recommend you to take a Full Backup before Rooting the phone.
No, Unlocking the Bootloader and flashing a Boot.img file will not reset your device. But Flashing a Custom Recovery like TWRP can Lock your device, a Full Format will be needed to decrypt the phone.
I have a problem on unlocking the bootloader, after waited for 166 hours and try to unlocking it, it shows unknown error (-1), please try again later.

Try to Patch the Boot.img with Previous versions of Magisk Manager and then flash it. Once a Stable Custom Recovery comes out, you can simply flash the Magisk.zip with that.
I think I have identified the problem. You are probably using a Redmi Note 9 Pro. If yes then check our guide for Rooting Redmi Note 9 Pro. This is the reason I made different posts for both devices, sometimes, users extract the wrong Boot.img from other variants Firmware.
